Grammar in Drops

Drops includes short grammar lessons you can use to practice key structures in your target language alongside vocabulary. This article explains what is available and what you can expect from these lessons.

Supported languages

Grammar lessons are currently available for:

  • English

  • Spanish

  • German

  • European Portuguese

If you are learning one of these languages, you will see grammar content in addition to standard vocabulary practice.

What kind of grammar can I practice?

The grammar lessons focus on common areas that many learners find difficult. Examples include:

English

  • Word order in questions

  • Negatives (for example: I don’t do something)

  • Prepositions (in, at, on, etc.)

  • Articles (a, an, the)

  • Present vs. present continuous tense

Spanish

  • Verb conjugations for different subjects and tenses

  • Difference between ser and estar (to be)

  • Gendered nouns and matching adjectives and articles

German

  • Noun genders (der, die, das)

  • Word order in sentences

  • Cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive)

  • Singular and plural forms

Portuguese (European)

  • Verb conjugations across tenses and subjects

  • Matching adjectives to noun gender

  • Contractions of prepositions and articles

  • Placement of pronouns and adverbs of degree

How grammar lessons work

Grammar lessons are designed to be short and focused, similar to regular Drops sessions.

Typical characteristics:

  • Session length - 5 minutes

  • Interactive exercises instead of long rule explanations

  • Concepts are introduced gradually, with repeated exposure over time

The goal is to help you notice and practice patterns through use, rather than through extended theoretical explanations.

FAQ

Does Drops explain full grammar rules?

Grammar lessons focus mainly on practice with examples and patterns, not on long, detailed rule descriptions. You will see the same structures used repeatedly so you can learn them by doing.

Can I use grammar lessons as a complete grammar course?

Grammar lessons are designed as short, supportive practice for key topics (such as word order, gender, and verb forms), not as a full standalone grammar course. For deeper theoretical explanations, you may want to combine Drops practice with other grammar resources.

Does Drops help with singular and plural forms?

Yes. Some exercises specifically target singular and plural forms in different languages.

What happened to Speak Practice?

Speak Practice has been removed from the app and is no longer available as of early March 2026. We’re exploring ways to improve speaking practice in the future, but for now we recommend using our grammar lessons and listening/audio activities to continue building your speaking confidence.

If you have questions about grammar content or run into issues accessing lessons, please contact our support team with details about your device, app version, and learning language so we can assist you more efficiently.
